SEATTLE -- An award-winning editor who has shepherded thousands of stories across the pages of the Seattle Times is moving on.
David Boardman, the executive editor and senior vice president of the Times, is leaving his post to take a job as the Dean of the School of Media and Communication at Temple University in Philadelphia, the Times reported.
Boardman, 56, was appointed to executive editor seven years ago. The newspaper has won two Pulitzer Prizes and numerous national awards in the last three years, even while staff at the Times was cut 45 percent in the face of ever-shrinking budgets at daily newspapers across the country.
He told the Times he was leaving his post because of the sense that an important opportunity lie ahead at Temple University.
The Stranger, Seattle's premier alternative weekly newspaper that has frequently been at odds with the city's only remaining daily newspaper, said "losing Boardman is a loss for the whole town."
"The Stranger has lobbed plenty of complaints at the Seattle Times over the years... but I don't think we've ever lobbed one at Boardman," Dominic Holden of The Stranger said. "He's overseen outstanding investigative journalism and fostered some hardworking, incisive reporters that have helped define the news in Seattle for radio, television, and other print media outlets."
Boardman will be replaced in the short term by managing editors Kathy Best and Suki Dardarian.
