EUGENE, Ore. (AP) _ Lane County commissioners have endorsed a proposal to boost the legal age for buying and using tobacco products to 21.
The Register-Guard newspaper (https://is.gd/Gtuats ) reports commissioners hope to implement the change countywide, but it's unclear whether the county has the authority to require cities to comply.
The commissioners Tuesday directed county staff to draft a potential ordinance, start outreach efforts with leaders of Lane County's 12 cities and organize meetings in several communities.
The proposed increase would be part of a national campaign to pass such laws at the local and state level. About 180 local governments have increased the minimum smoking age from 18 to 21.
