KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- A suicide car bomber detonated his device near a NATO-led convoy in the Afghan capital Tuesday, killing at least three soldiers, authorities said.
The blast took place during rush hour Tuesday morning.
The NATO-led force in Afghanistan said three service members were killed and five were wounded in the bombing, Sky News reported.
It was not immediately known if Americans were among the casualties.
A large plume of smoke filled the sky over Kabul, and the U.S. Embassy sounded its "duck-and-cover" alarm.
Witness Sakhi Ahmad said the explosion took place on Kabul International Airport Road, near the Supreme Court compound.
He and Afghan Deputy Interior Minister Ayoub Salangi also said a convoy of foreign forces appeared to be the target.
Most NATO troops are due to withdraw from Afghanistan by the end of this year as the U.S.-led war effort against the Taliban winds down.
The latest Taliban attack comes as Afghanistan grapples with the messy fallout from its presidential election this year.
