EDMOND, Okla. -- A father's response to a student accused of planning a 'mass casualty event' at an Oklahoma high school is spreading across social media.
On Friday, police said they uncovered a plan of a potential mass killing at Edmond North High School, KFOR reported. Several students reported text messages from the suspect which led authorities to search the teen’s home where they found evidence of explosives and blueprints to possibly carry out an attack.
The father of one of those students reacted to the news a little differently.
“The first thought just goes back to what it’s like being a teenager. It’s a brutal, brutal time,” father Charles Martin told KFOR.
Martin is a writer and decided to pen a letter to the 16-year-old suspect. But it doesn't read exactly like you might expect.
“Even if what he was going to do was monstrous, he is a human being,” Martin told NewsChannel 4. “I hope he can find his way back to something even close to normal, that he can just survive this hole that he’s in and find something better on the other side."
Martin says the response to his letter has been overwhelmingly positive, and the fact that an attack was prevented allowed him to be more kind in his reaction.
Authorities said the suspect is being treated at a mental health facility. Charges could be filed against the teenager later this week.
