Vancouver woman exonerated in death of 5-month-old grandson

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — A Vancouver woman is no longer facing charges in connection to the death of her 5-month-old grandson after the prosecution threw out the case.

The Columbian reports that 56-year-old April Blue Colton appeared in Clark County Superior Court Tuesday to be arraigned on a first-degree manslaughter charge when the case was dropped.

Court records show the baby's mother left him with Colton when he stopped breathing. Colton then placed the infant face down in a horseshoe-shaped pillow and covered him with a blanket.

Colton's attorney Jeff Sowder says the case had several problems. The Oregon death certificate stated that the boy's death was an accident and an autopsy found the boy's cause of death to be undetermined.

Sowder says it is possible that charges could be filed at a later date.
