VIDEO: Suspected drunken driver kills woman in Kitsap County

NEAR BREMERTON- Family and loved ones are remembering a young woman struck and killed while walking home from a bar early Wednesday morning. The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office said Alana Kemppainen, 23, died when a drunk driver hit her and a friend near the 5500 block of Tracyton Blvd NW.

“I don’t understand why God takes his youngest. She’s just an amazing young lady,” said Tricia Harder, family friend.

Friends and family left flowers for Alana near the scene Wednesday. Harder said Alana and her friend were walking home from the bar because they thought it would be safer than driving. A short time after they left, the driver left that same bar and hit them as they walked along the road. The second victim, a 25-year-old man, was airlifted to a Seattle hospital. The driver stopped and was later arrested.

“It is the investigators opinion at this point in time that he was operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol and possibly other substances,” said Scott Wilson with KCSO.

The driver was booked into jail on one count of vehicular homicide and one count of vehicular assault. His bond was set at $500,000.

He is expected to be in court Thursday.
