35% of voters turned out for presidential primary; state official calls for changes
OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Secretary of State Kim Wyman is calling on the Legislature to move Washington state's presidential primary from May to March.
Wyman said Friday that when they return to the Capitol in January, lawmakers should also consider adding a separate ballot for voters who don't want have to declare a party affiliation in order to have their vote count in the election.
Thirty-five percent of the state's 4 million voters participated in the May 24 statewide primary. Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump both won the state, though only Republicans use the results for allocating delegates to the national convention.
State Democrats only use the results from the state caucuses, which Bernie Sanders won in March.
