Detectives able to freeze bank account of accused killer John Reed before he, brother fled
EVERETT, Wash. -- One of the two brothers charged with killing an Arlington couple tried to pull together nearly $100,000 in cash before going on the run, sources said Monday night.
Detectives froze John Reed's bank account before the money transfers were made, sources said.
The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office said John Reed and brother Tony Reed killed Patrick Shunn, 45, and his wife, Monique Patenaude, 46, of Arlington, on or about April 11 over a longstanding property dispute. John Reed was a former neighbor of the couple.
The Reed brothers fled at first to their parents' home in Ellensburg on April 13, before driving south toward Arizona the next day. The Reed brothers obtained a 2002 gold Acura in Phoenix and left that area on Sunday, April 17, or in the early morning of April 18, police say. They are believed to be somewhere in Mexico now.
Investigators found John Reed's then-worthless cashier's checks at his parents' home when they searched it last Wednesday. The money was from the forced sale of his property to Snohomish County after the Oso mudslide.
The U.S. Marshals Service is offering a $5,000 reward to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest of the Reed brothers.
The bodies of Shunn and Patenaude have yet to be found and recovered.
