Lynnwood man who set ex-wife on fire sentenced to nearly 22 years in prison

EVERETT, Wash. -- A judge sentenced a Lynnwood man Wednesday to nearly 22 years for attempted murder for beating his ex-wife and setting her on fire inside their home.

David Morgan, 46, was convicted last week of attempted murder, assault and arson.

Prosecutors said Morgan beat Brenda Welch and set her on fire so he didn't have to pay her child support or part of his pension.

Morgan has denied the allegations and told police he awoke to someone hitting him in the head and found Welch on fire. He says he tried to extinguish the flames.

Welch, who suffered a fractured skull and burns, says she has no memory of the attack.

Morgan's attorneys say he plans to appeal.
