Mason County man jailed after allegedly shooting wife on accident while cleaning gun

SHELTON, Wash. — A 68-year-old Mason County man called 911 and said he accidentally shot  his wife while cleaning his gun in the kitchen Monday.

The Mason County Sheriff’s Office said deputies found the man, Gary Crandell, performing CPR on his wounded wife when they arrived at their home in the 100 block of SE Evan Boulevard near Shelton. Deputies took over the CPR, but 67-year-old Jeannie Crandell was later pronounced dead.

Sheriff's deputies responding to the call began a homicide investigation, and booked Gary into the Mason County Jail for investigation of negligent homicide and first-degree manslaughter.

A sheriff’s spokesman said Gary reported his wife was making dinner while he was cleaning his gun in the kitchen. The gun went off, with the bullet striking her in the chest.
