Deputies in south Florida have a new high-tech partner on patrol.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO) debuted the Police Unmanned Ground vehicle (PUG) Patrol Partner earlier this month as part of a pilot program developed and sponsored by Policing Lab.
Dig deeper:
The PUG combines advanced autonomy with AI-driven analytics, real-time crime data, and a suite of sensors including 360-degree cameras, thermal imaging, license plate recognition, and drone launch capabilities.
What they're saying:
"The PUG allows us to explore how new technology can keep people safe while making the best use of our resources," said MDSO Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz. "Deputies remain at the heart of this mission, and the PUG is here to support them."
What's next:
During the 12-month pilot program, MDSO will evaluate how the PUB improves response times and enhances deterrence as well as officer safety and increases public trust with law enforcement.
Policing Lab, a nonprofit innovation center founded by leaders in law enforcement, technology, and research, partners with agencies across the country to test and scale practical innovations that improve officer safety, strengthen community trust, and make policing more effective.
