Officer shoots, kills man wielding knife at St. Louis airport

St. Louis airport shooting: 1 dead

One person was killed early Friday in a shooting that involved an officer at St. Louis Lambert International Airport. A spokesperson for the St. Louis County Police Department said the incident happened around 1 a.m. inside Terminal 1 and involved two airport security officers. The person who was shot allegedly entered a prohibited location and when asked to leave the area pulled out a knife. Offcials provide update.

An officer shot and killed a man wielding a knife early Friday morning outside the doors of a terminal at a St. Louis airport. 

FOX News reported that St. Louis County police said that the man refused to drop the knife and was tased by one officer before a second officer shot him.

The shooting occurred around 1 a.m. Friday at St. Louis Lambert International Airport, St. Louis County Police spokesperson Vera Clay told the Associated Press. 

Authorities said no one else was injured in the shooting. Clay told the AP that police officers saw the man, who was not identified, in an area where he should not have been and refused to leave.

The unidentified man showed officers a knife when they attempted to get him to move. Clay also told the AP that police officers used tasers, but the man continued to move toward the police officers and one of the officers fired their gun, striking and killing the man.

FOX News noted that the two officers were part of the airport's police department and had six months and one year of service, and each had prior law enforcement experience.

According to the AP, Clay said some of the shooting investigation will center on figuring out why the man was at the airport and had to be removed.

St. Louis Lambert International Airport CEO and Airport Director Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge said in a statement obtained by KSDK-TV in St. Louis the following:

"Today’s incident in Terminal One was a tragic event for our Airport Community. However, I take great pride in our response. As police responded and county authorities conducted their investigation, we were able to continue normal operations at STL."

"The Terminal One MetroLink station was closed for approximately three hours. During that time, shuttle buses were used to transport riders from Terminal One to the Terminal Two MetroLink station. The airport is cooperating with the St. Louis County Police Department as they continue their investigation."
