UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. -- The United States Golf Association and city leaders have finalized a number of parking and driving regulations for the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay.
Grandview Drive in University Place lives up to the name. It's the grand entrance to this year's U.S. Open, but during the tournament it will be off-limits to spectators.
Public Works Director, Gary Cooper, said, "Neighbors around here were really concerned. They didn’t want gridlock in their neighborhoods. These are residential streets that are all pretty narrow."
The USGA and city leaders are drawing up strict rules for parking and traffic to accommodate the tens of thousands of fans expected.
Spectators will have to take a 30 minute shuttle ride to the Chambers Bay course from two designated parking locations. One location is at the State Fair Grounds in Puyallup. Another parking location is at Fort Steilacoom Park in Lakewood.
Parking on side streets also won't be allowed within several blocks of the course, and event parking is prohibited in much of University Place.
At these designated parking locations spectators will go through security checkpoints before they board shuttles to the event.
Cooper said, "So instead of trying to get everybody through the security at the course. They do that off site. That’s the way the USGA has done it for years and it works very smoothly."
