Seattle drivers beware: Five more school zone speed cameras going in
SEATTLE -- Seattle officials are pushing to make school zones safer. Mayor Mike McGinn announced this morning that the city is installing speed cameras in five more school zones.
Speeding drivers will be cited near Bailey Gatzert Elementary, Dearborn Park Elementary, Nathan Eckstein Middle School, Roxhill Elementary, and Holy Family Parish School. Drivers in those areas have a tendency to speed.
The speed limit in school zones is 20 miles per hour, but the mayor said officals know from citiation history that it's often ignored. Last fall the city installed cameras in four other school zones. That's led to a combined 16 % reduction in citations for speeding across the four schools.
“The public has been clear that we need to do more to protect children as they travel to and from school,” said McGinn. “The data shows that the existing cameras are helping improve safety near schools by reducing travel speed and cameras should be installed at additional schools.”
If you get caught speeding through a school zone, it'll cost you $189. Even if you're going just one mile over the limit.
