State Patrol troopers cracking down on violators of 'Move Over' law
MARYSVILLE, Wash. --Troopers are cracking down on drivers who don't move over when they see emergency vehicles on the side of the road.
Hundreds of people get hurt each year by drivers who don't obey the law. Troopers say they have to put a stop to this dangerous, and illegal, driving behavior
The move over law is simple: move over when you see police stopped on the side of the road. When you don’t move over, the result can be deadly.
The dash-cam footage seen on the video above are from Utah, but Washington State Patrol troopers know the dangerous reality all too well.
Over the past seven years, more than 200 WSP cars have been struck. Sgt. Keith Leary was hit in 2002.
The 212 collisions are alarming for us, Sgt. Keith Leary said, "as we think in the back of our heads ‘when are we going to get hit next?’ That number should be zero."
The law says you should move over a lane when you see any emergency car on the side of the road. If, and only if, you’re not able to move over, you’re asked to at least slow down.
Moving over isn’t just the safe thing to do, it's the law.
Last year, WSP troopers stopped more than 4,000 violators of the Move Over law.
