Tesla has issued a recall for 12,963 cars over a defect in a battery pack that may cause a sudden loss of drive power that could increase the risk of a crash.

Tesla is recalling certain 2025 Model 3 and 2026 Model Y cars which may cause the driver to lose the ability to accelerate the vehicle, raising the risk of a crash, Reuters reported, citing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Tesla found 36 warranty claims and 26 field reports connected to the problem as of October 7, but told USA Today it’s unaware of any crashes, injuries or deaths related to the defect.

Owners of the recalled vehicles can take them to a Tesla dealership to replace the affected battery pack free of charge.
News of the recall follows the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration plans to open an investigation into 2.88 million Tesla cars featuring the Full Self-Driving system after over 50 reports of traffic-safety violations and a series of crashes.
