Federal Way neighbors worried about safety after 3 deadly shootings
FEDERAL WAY -- Joy Champion feels as concerned as many in Federal Way tonight. “We can’t go out at 11 at night. It’s really scary that we have to be worried about these other people,” says Champion. Three deadly shootings in 48 hours have neighbors throughout Federal Way on edge. The city normally sees three to four homicides in a year. “It’s crazy. It’s scary. It makes you feel like you should always be looking over your shoulder now when you're out here and you shouldn't have to,” says Terry Watson. Terry Watson lives just around the corner from the most recent shooting that killed a navy veteran and student had been running with his dog; training for a marathon. The police Chief says the department is pulling all its resources to make these cases a priority. Five patrol officers have been moved to the detective unit. And five officers from the traffic unit—are now on patrol. People we talked with tonight wonder if the Chief’s warning to stay inside after dark is enough. “Makes me believe that they are kind of puzzled themselves,” says Todd Champion. Police have no suspects right now, but we do know the shootings are late at night/early morning and close to the BPA trail. The city council is holding an emergency meeting tomorrow to talk about the spike in gun violence.
