Man killed in Belltown shooting

Seattle police are investigating a homicide after a man died in a Belltown shooting Monday morning.

Seattle police are investigating a homicide after a man died in a Belltown shooting Monday morning.

Officers were called around 4:30 a.m. to 3rd Avenue and Bell Street. When they arrived, they found a man who had been shot and began life-saving measures.

Medics rushed the 37-year-old man to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center, where he later died.

FOX 13 spoke to several people who either live around this area or stayed the night at the Belltown Inn, which overlooks the intersection. Most said they did hear a commotion, but they didn't know it was deadly. That news was a little too close for comfort, for some.

"My bedroom window is above the bus stop," said Audra Fulp, who lives in the Belltown neighborhood. "It was 5 a.m., I guess something like that, and I heard five or six shots. And I just kind of froze, because I don't know, it's kind of scary.

Fulp moved to Belltown right around the start of the pandemic.

"It's changed quite a bit, but it's always had a certain edge," Fulp said. "Yeah, things happen."

This stretch of the neighborhood is no stranger to sirens or altercation.

After 20 minutes of FOX 13 filming in the area earlier Monday, we witnessed this man getting visually confrontational with another person at the bus stop, as well as Seattle Police responding to another call down the road. Last week, there was also a major narcotics bust nearby, with three men being arrested.

Last Thursday, a man was shot in the leg at the same intersection.

According to Seattle Police Department's crime dashboard, comparing the end of January this year to 2022, there are 15 fewer calls for shootings and shots fired in the city. Keep in mind, however, they do not have data published yet for February or March. In 2022, February and March reported 109 calls for shootings and shots fired, seven of which were deadly.

For some, like Fulp, however, they're still okay to call the area 'home.' Even with the occasional overnight disturbance.

"It's not that it doesn't phase me. I'm not really sure what it is," Fulp said. "But, I like this neighborhood a lot. There are really good people here."

At 3rd Avenue and Bell Street Monday morning, a group is visiting on a mission trip giving their time to serve the community and pick up trash.

"I think we found one needle and just a lot of glass from, like, bottles and stuff," said Julia Meengs, visiting Seattle on a mission trip.

FOX 13 told them about the recent shooting, but it didn't keep them from their mission.

"But, it's something that unfortunately has become more normal, something we become used to," said Andrew Phelps, assistant director of annual giving for Spring Arbor University. "But, still something that needs to be solved."

Homicide detectives are leading the investigation, but police say the circumstances of the shooting are unknown. No suspect description was given.
