USPS eyes shipping booze to solve budget crisis
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Postal Service has a found a solution to solving its massive budget gap: alcohol.
USPS wants to dive into the booze delivery business in order to recover lost revenues.
Last year the agency lost $16 billion, prompting a discussion to end door-to-door and Saturday delivery.
Postal centers shuttered in response to the loss, causing thousands of USPS employees to lose their jobs.
Now the agency wants to cut into the profits of competitors Fed-Ex and UPS by allowing the delivery of beer, wine and liquor.
They’ll need congress to overturn a 100-year ban enacted during the Temperance-era, preventing USPS from transporting liquor.
It’s unclear whether congress will budge. A similar provision to allow USPS to ship alcohol was defeated back in 2011.
