Seattle weather: Very wet and blustery start to Thursday

A Winter Storm Warning for the Cascades through Thursday evening for additional heavy snow and dangerous conditions. The higher peaks could see up to 30" of new snow through Thursday night.

A strong low pressure system is bringing gusty wind, mountain snow, and lowland rain to Western Washington on Thursday.

While the winds were gusty in the center and south Puget Sound areas this morning, they weren’t quite as strong as expected due to the storm arriving weaker and a bit further south than expected. Northern Oregon was hit with around 60,000 power outages, compared to the 10,000 power outages this morning in Washington.

That said, it was still a gusty morning for many, with gusts in the 30 to 50 mph range for parts of the central and south Puget Sound.

Mountain snow will continue to be a factor, with tough travel over the Cascades on Thursday. Since midnight, 9 inches of new snow has fallen at Stevens Pass, 5 inches at Snoqualmie Pass and 10 inches at White Pass. Avalanche danger will also be high on Thursday.

Winds will die off this afternoon and evening with rain becoming more scattered. There may even be some sunshine in the mix this afternoon.
