LIVE: Egypt vs Iran. Seattle braces for World Cup global clash
Perhaps the most anticipated match of the World Cup for off-field reasons, Egypt and Iran will kickoff at 8 p.m. Friday as they battle for the top spot in Group G.
The match has drawn heavy notoriety since it is also the "Pride Match," as designated by the local organization committee for Pride weekend celebrations. Same-sex relationships are illegal in Egypt and Iran, and both countries petitioned FIFA to exclude Pride flags from being allowed in the stadium for the match. FIFA denied that request.
Throw in the ongoing hostilities between the United States and Iran, and the match has plenty of storylines beyond the football itself.
However, both teams – and Belgium – are still capable of winning the group.
