SEATTLE – You can still call him ‘Cutie,’ but the Woodland Park Zoo’s seven-week-old baby giraffe now has a name. The name ‘Misawa’ (pronounced me-SAW-wa} is actually a common greeting in Tanzania and southwest Kenya, where the giraffe is originally from.

It was chosen by the current class of Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, which has a partnership with the zoo. According to a news release, it’s a fitting connection given the school’s dedication to the health of humans and wildlife through the Global Animal Health programs in east Africa.

Look for Misawa, his mom and aunt in the outdoor area of the giraffe barn mid-mornings and afternoons. If you can’t make it to the zoo, you can watch him online through the Woodland Park Zoo’s live ‘Giraffe Baby Cam.’
