Renton man dragged, shot and killed in car prowling, neighbors react
Dave Detling follows up on a developing story out of Renton where a man was killed in a violent attack as police say he tried to stop a car theft. His neighbors express sympathy saying his life was worth more than a vehicle. This comes just days after 60 cars were broken into in Renton in one night. Suspects from both cases remain on the run as police ask the public for help if they have street facing cameras.
RENTON, Wash. - Police in Renton say an interrupted car prowl turned into a murder early Saturday morning.
The shooting happened at around 3:25 a.m. on Feb. 1 on South 27th Place right off Benson, near Nelson Middle School.
Investigators tell FOX 13 they received calls from at least five other car prowl victims in the area.
Timeline:
Police say a 35-year-old victim approached a suspect who broke into his car and was leaving with it. When the victim grabbed the driver's side window, the suspect reportedly dragged the man and shot him.
The victim died shortly after, according to RPD. Officers searched for the car throughout the morning and announced a 2019 Kia Sorento was located. However, the suspect remains at large.
In total, law enforcement report there were five cars prowled by at least two people. They are considered armed and dangerous.
What you can do:
Police are asking anyone along the route of Benson Road from South 27th Place, east on Southeast 168th Street, north on 128th Avenue Southeast, east on Southeast 132nd Place Southeast to check their street facing camera for possible video of the suspects leaving the scene.
Police are looking for footage between the hours of 3:15 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.
