Marysville burglary caught on tape; police ask for public's help
MARYSVILLE -- It’s a day Leaha Lara will never forget.
The day two burglars cased and then burglarized her Maryville home of some of the things most dear to her.
"It happened August 5th and it was about 3:45.They took two diamond rings of mine, one was a skull diamond ring that meant a lot to me and a pearl necklace and a little necklace I bought for my daughter whose seven and I was going to give it to her when she was older,” Home burglary victim Leaha Lara said.
Leaha was gone for only a few minutes, but that's all it took.
What they didn't know is their crime was caught on camera and saved to a hard drive.
On the video one of the bad guys walks up to the house and knocks on the door.
When no one answers he appears to text someone then looks in the windows before walking around back.
Then a few minutes later a second guy walks up and knocks on the door.
He then notices an open window, slits the screen and hops inside.
Minutes later he’s seen exiting the back of the house with a bag full of loot.
"I was really creeped out. I'd never seen anything like it or experienced anything like this so it was just a really creepy feeling,” Leaha said.
Police hope someone will recognize the men and help them put names with the faces.
Before they can do to someone else what they did to Leaha.
"I'm always on alert now when I get out of my car when it's dark and if nobody is home I'm looking around trying to see who is walking up the street or if there is any movement in the bushes,” Leaha said.
Leaha is certainly not alone, home burglaries are happening all over.
Police say one big problem is people leaving doors and windows unlocked.
Even as the weather gets colder, they say, homeowners must continue to be vigilant.
Leaha agrees.
"Definitely lock everything up even if you're going to be gone for just ten minutes to the store and really what I think is important is for you to talk to your neighbors and kind of watch out for each other,” Leaha said.
Police also remind us the holiday shopping season is only two months away.
There will be a lot of gifts in our homes and you need to remember to make sure no one sees you bring them inside and that they are not visible from outside.
