Police: 11-year-old who took gun, 400 rounds to school says 'voice' told him to shoot classmate

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- An 11-year-old boy who allegedly brought a handgun, several knives and more than 400 rounds of ammunition to Frontier Middle School in Vancouver appeared in court Thursday.

“It’s scary that a little boy who’s 11 was able to get a handgun and bring it to school,” said Charlene Lundberg, who lives next door to the boy and his family.

Her daughter said he seemed fine on the way to school yesterday.

“He was just acting normal, he got on the bus, sat in the front,” said Brettley Lundberg, an eighth-grader. “We didn’t know anything he had with him.”

Police said the boy’s mother called the school after noticing some of her kitchen knives were missing. The school was put on lockdown for about two hours while the campus was searched.

“I was scared, thinking what’s going on outside of this classroom,” said Tiffany West, another student at Frontier.

The boy told police there was a voice in his head, telling him to shoot a boy that was allegedly bullying his friend.  He was stopped before anyone was hurt.

Another boy says he can’t believe this happened.

“I thought we had a good friendship,” said Tim Muresan. “But now I don’t think I could trust him.”

The boy's family released a statement late Thurday. It read, in part: "We are at a loss for words and deeply saddened for the fear that these circumstances have caused. We are cooperating with law enforcement, school personnel and mental health officials to ensure our son gets the help he needs.”
