SEQUIM -- A skeleton found by contractors replacing a septic tank in August may be thousands of years old, the Peninsula Daily News reported.

The skeletal remains found Aug. 23 at a site near Diamond Point Road are believed to be of a Native American. Scientists said the skeleton, discovered by a contractor who was back-filling a septic tank hole, was at least 200 years old, but could even be thousands of years old.

Work on the site stopped quickly after the discovery of the skull, leg bones and other bone fragments.  The state Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation has custody of the remains, and will investigate them further.

Officials with the department said they have not found enough remains to determine the gender and age of the person.
