Woman behind bars for hitting cop husband with truck
SALEM, Ore. (KPTV) -- A woman was sentenced to ten years behind bars, accused of striking her husband with her pickup outside the couple's home.
The victim, off-duty Salem police officer Kenneth Nunez, was treated at Salem Hospital for several weeks after the 2012 incident.
Oregon State Police said Kenneth Nunez, 48, was walking toward his motorcycle in front of the couple's home when he was struck by a 2003 Ford F-150 pickup driven by his wife, 47-year-old Shirley Nunez.
The crash came just a few minutes after Salem police responded to a call from a home in the 1800 block of Torrance Street. That's where a woman reported that Shirley Nunez, while armed with a handgun, entered the home through a rear, sliding glass door, pointed the gun at the woman and briefly confronted her about a suspected relationship between the woman and Kenneth Nunez.
State police said Shirley Nunez then left in the pickup and drove back to her home, where she crashed into her husband.
Chris Davis, the victim's neighbor, said he heard "a couple loud bangs" as he was watching TV.
"Several cop cars showed up, and they had police line across the road," he said. "I saw someone run across the road."
In court today Shirley Nunez, pled no contest to Assault in the First Degree Constituting Domestic Violence, guilty to Burglary in the First Degree, and guilty to Unlawful Use of a Weapon.
Kenneth Nunez has worked for the Salem Police Department since 2005. He's currently assigned to the patrol division as an officer, and has experience with an out-of-state police agency before joining Salem PD.
