SEATTLE - Luis Castillo takes the mound for the Seattle Mariners in Game 2 of the American League Division Series against reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers.
Follow along for live updates:
9th inning: Mariners win 3-2. Andrés Muñoz pitched a clean ninth inning to earn the save for Seattle. Muñoz struck out Zach McKinstry, Javier Báez popped up to second base, and a chopper to first base by Parker Meadows closed out the first postseason home win for the Mariners since Game 5 of the 2001 AL Division Series over the Cleveland (then) Indians.
8th inning: Matt Brash takes over from Eduard Bazardo to begin the eighth. Brash walks Gleyber Torres to bring the tying run to the plate with left-handers Kerry Carpenter and Riley Greene due up and no outs. Brash strikes out Carpenter with a great slider on the outside corner for the first out of the inning. A sharp grounder to first base from Greene is booted by Josh Naylor and everyone is safe as Naylor takes the fielding error for Seattle.
It immediately comes back to bite the Mariners as Spencer Torkelson slices a double inside the first baseline against the wall. Both Torres and Greene race around to score as Victor Robles needs a long run to get to the ball. Brash bounces back with a strikeout looking of Wenceel Pérez and a called checked swing on Dillon Dingler to get out of the inning, but it's a whole new game again. Tied 2-2.
Kyle Finnegan takes over from Tarik Skubal for Detroit, who exits after allowing two runs (on Jorge Polanco's two solo home run), on five hits with a walk and nine strikeouts. Cal Raleigh laced a one-out double into the right field corner, and Julio Rodríguez followed with a double into the left field corner as Raleigh races home to restore Seattle's lead.
A broken bat infield single from Polanco advanced Rodríguez to third as the Mariners' offense came alive with Skubal out of the game. Rodríguez gets thrown out at home as he was running on contact on a grounder to third base from Eugenio Suárez for the second out.
Tigers' manager A.J. Hinch turns to left-hander Brant Hurter to face the left-handed Josh Naylor with two outs. Naylor pops out to second base as Seattle will try to hold a one-run lead in the ninth. Mariners lead 3-2.
7th inning: Eduard Bazado takes over for Gabe Speier in the seventh inning. Bazardo gets Dillon Dingler to ground out to first base, and strikes out Zach McKinstry before a two-out single from Javier Báez drops in front of Julio Rodríguez in center field. It's just the second hit in the game for Detroit after Gleyber Torres' two-out single in the fifth inning off Luis Castillo. But Bazardo gets a pop-up from Parker Meadows to shortstop to end the inning.
After Josh Naylor grounded out to first base to open the bottom of the seventh, Mitch Garver snapped an 0-for-7 streak (with six strikeouts) against Tarik Skubal this season with a single through the infield. Luke Raley replaced Garver as a pinch-runner. Skubal jammed Victor Robles for a soft pop-up to first base, and a sharp play from Javier Báez to get to a ball behind second base to retire J.P. Crawford ended Seattle's seventh.
6th inning: Gabe Speier remains on the mound for the sixth inning for Seattle and cuts down the middle of the Detroit lineup. Speier strikes out left-handed hitter Riley Greene, gets Spencer Torkelson to ground out to shortstop, and pinch-hitter Wenceel Pérez pops out to second base as Seattle keeps the Tigers scoreless through six.
Jorge Polanco gets Tarik Skubal again in the sixth inning to extend Seattle's lead. A two-out, full-count 99.1 mph fastball left in the middle of the plate with two outs was crushed out to left field by Polanco to give the Mariners a 2-0 lead. It was a nearly identical pitch location to the 91.6 mph slider that Polanco homered on in the fourth inning.
Polanco is the fourth Mariner to have a multi-home run game in the postseason, joining Ken Griffey Jr. (1995), Edgar Martínez (1995) and Jay Buhner (1995). Mariners lead 2-0.
5th inning: Javier Báez worked a one-out walk against Luis Castillo for Detroit's first base runner since the second inning. After a fielder's choice from Parker Meadows, Castillo surrendered his first hit on 1-2 sinker through the right side as Meadows advanced to third. Manager Dan Wilson takes the ball and gives it to Gabe Speier with left-handed bats Kerry Carpenter and Riley Greene due up.
Speier strikes out Carpenter on four pitches to strand Meadows at third base as the Mariners hold their lead. Castillo's final line: 4 ⅔ innings pitched with one hit, four walks, and three strikeouts on 85 pitches with 53 strikes.
Mitch Garver flies out to right field and Victor Robles flies out to left for two quick outs against Tarik Subal. A two-out drag bunt from J.P. Crawford forces a wild glove shovel throw from second baseman Gleyber Torres, which is off-target as Crawford records Seattle's third base hit. Skubal bounced back with a strikeout of Randy Arozarena to end the fifth inning.
4th inning: Another nine-pitch inning for Luis Castillo after two laborious innings to begin the game for Seattle. Spencer Torkelson and Dillon Dingler flew out to center field with Colt Keith flying out to right field for three routine outs and another clean inning for Castillo.
Jorge Polanco gives the Mariners a 1-0 lead on a solo home run into the Seattle bullpen off Tarik Skubal. A 2-0 slider from Skubal was left in the middle of the plate and Polanco turned on it for his third postseason home run of his career and his 27th home run of 2025 for the Mariners. It was also the fourth inning in Game 1 when Julio Rodríguez gave Seattle the lead with a solo home run off Troy Melton.
Rodríguez popped out to third, Eugenio Suárez struck out looking, and Josh Naylor struck out swinging in an otherwise clean inning for Skubal, but the Mariners strike first. Mariners lead 1-0.
3rd inning: A much-needed nine-pitch third inning for Luis Castillo after throwing 51 pitches in his first two innings. Castillo struck out Gleyber Torres, forced a groundout to second from Kerry Carpenter, and got Riley Greene to fly out to center field.
Tarik Skubal issued a lead-off walk to Victor Robles, but the Mariners couldn't make it count. J.P. Crawford struck out, Randy Arozarna flew out to left field, and Cal Raleigh lined out to shortstop as the game remains scoreless through three innings.
2nd inning: Luis Castillo issued a lead-off walk to Colt Keith as the Tigers continued to tax his pitch count. After a quick pop-up to second base by Dillon Dingler, Castillo doesn't get a call from home plate umpire Jeremie Rehak on a 2-2 fastball on the inside edge of the plate. Castillo walked Zach McKinstry on the next pitch and both runners advanced into scoring position on a swinging bunt from Javier Báez.
Another call goes against Castillo as third base umpire Alan Porter said Parker Meadows checked his swing on a 1-2 fastball that would have been strike three. It takes a few more pitches, but Meadows goes down swinging for the third out, leaving Keith and McKinstry stranded. However, Castillo is at 51 pitches through two.
Tarik Skubal cruises through the second inning for Detroit, as Eugenio Suárez flies out to center field, Josh Naylor grounds out to first, and Mitch Garver strikes out swinging. Garver is now 0-for-6 with six strikeouts – all swinging – against Skubal this season.
1st inning: A lengthy but clean first inning for Mariners starter Luis Castillo. Castillo needed 25 pitches to get out of the first as all four batters Detroit sent to the plate saw at least five pitches. A walk to Kerry Carpenter with one out was the only hiccup with a strikeout of Gleyber Torres and two fly-outs to left field by Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson.
Randy Arozarena led off with a four-hop single through the infield to open the game for Seattle against Tarik Skubal. Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodríguez both struck out, with Arozarena swiping second base to put a runner in scoring position. However, Skubal gets Jorge Polanco to pop out to third base to end the inning.
Pregame: Mariners Hall of Famer Jay Buhner throws out the first pitch to Dominic Canzone.
Injured Mariners reliever Trent Thornton takes the microphone to get the crowd going before first pitch.
