The Seattle Mariners have acquired utility player Miles Mastrobuoni in a trade with the Chicago Cubs for cash considerations.
Mastrobuoni, 29, has played parts of three seasons in the Majors for the Cubs and Tampa Bay Rays. He's appeared in 118 career games, posting a .219 batting average with a home run, eight doubles, nine RBI, and 16 stolen bases with 21 walks and 55 strikeouts.
In 50 games last season with the Cubs, Mastrobuoni hit .194 with three doubles, seven walks, and 17 strikeouts with four RBI and two stolen bases. He was a far more effective player in 2023 when he had a .241 average with his lone MLB home run, five doubles, five RBI, and 13 stolen bases with 13 walks and 32 strikeouts.
Mastrobuoni has played five different defensive positions across his three seasons: second base, shortstop, third base, left field and right field. He's also a left-handed hitter, which helps balance out the roster following the departure of Josh Rojas this offseason.
To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, catcher Nick Raposo was designated for assignment.
Raposo, 26, was claimed off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays last month. He's yet to play in the Majors, though he spent a couple of days on the St. Louis Cardinals active roster in June as a backup. Toronto claimed him when he was designated for assignment by the Cardinals in June.
He finished the season with a .206 batting average with eight home runs, 33 RBIs, and a .620 OPS for the Memphis Redbirds (St. Louis) and the Buffalo Bison (Toronto).
The Mariners now have 10 days to trade, release or outright Raposo.
