1 missing, 2 injured after boats collide near Point Defiance Park
TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard says crews are searched in Commencement Bay for a man who went missing after two boats collided late Saturday.
Petty Officer 1st Class George Degener said Sunday morning that two people have been taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
He says authorities believe alcohol contributed to the crash, which happened at about 11 p.m. near Point Defiance Park in Tacoma.
Degener says after the collision a boat carrying four people capsized and everyone aboard went into the water. Pierce County marine crews rescued three people from that vessel, but a man remained missing. He says Tacoma police also arrested the boat's male operator.
Crews searched about 35 square miles overnight for the missing man. Active search for the missing man was suspended around 2 p.m. Sunday.
That boat collided with another vessel carrying two people. Those two were taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for serious injuries.
