17-year-old basketball star turns out to be 29

WINDSOR, Ontario – There’s a reason high school basketball star Jonathon Nicola played like a grown man.

He is one, it turns out.

The Windsor Star reports that the Canadian Border Services Agency arrested Nicola after finding the Catholic Central Comets’ best player is a 29-year-old Sudanese refugee, not a 17-year-old prodigy.

Nicola, who is a 6-foot-9 202-pounder with a shoe size of 16, reportedly lives with coach Pete Cusumano.

“Generally I can tell you that we have a system of checks and balances in place that whenever international students are coming into any of our schools, we make sure that they have all of the necessary government documentation that they require in order to be in one of our schools,” school spokesman Stephen Fields told the Star.

Cusumano told the Star in a feature story earlier this year that Nicola had a shot at the NBA because he was so good for such a young p layer.

Yahoo reported that Nicola is being detained because he poses a flight risk.
