3 killed in Oregon crash; driver was eluding deputies

BEND, Ore. (AP) _ Oregon State Police say three people died when a driver eluding sheriff's deputies collided with a car while passing vehicles in a no-passing zone.

Lt. Bill Fugate says the crash happened Tuesday night on U.S. 97 north of La Pine, shortly after deputies stopped their chase.

KTVZ reports  that information from a police scanner indicates a deputy started pursuing the pickup at 8:40 p.m. When speeds hit triple digits, a deputy was overheard saying to discontinue the pursuit.

A few minutes later, another officer said: ``He's going to hit somebody head-on!'' She quickly added: ``He just hit somebody head-on, and we have flames!''

Police say the suspect, 47-year-old Brett Young of La Pine, died at the scene. Also killed were the two people in the car he struck: 50-year-old Pamela James of Bend and 33-year-old Steven Clink of Bend.

Fugate says Young was wanted in Nevada for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
