Auburn police search for kids who stole deputy mayor's car

Auburn police say a group of children stole the car of the city’s deputy mayor while council was voting her into a new role during a council meeting.

On Tuesday night, Auburn City Council voted Cheryl Rakes in as deputy mayor.

However, outside city hall, police said four kids were stealing her Kia Soul.

Police say they chased the suspects but pulled back from the pursuit. The kids dumped the stolen vehicle at the Madison at River’s Edge Apartments, police said.

This complex was the sight of a double shooting in September of 2022.

Investigators said the thieves damaged the ignition of the car and stole items from inside the vehicle.

"I’m incredibly grateful to the Auburn Police Department and its officers for their work in recovering the vehicle quickly and safely," Rakes said.

Investigators said they used their ‘Flock’ license-reading cameras to track the stolen car to Kent and back to Auburn.

Police said there are no pictures of the suspects. Investigators believe four children were involved, but they have made no arrests.
