Authorities warn of new phone scam
WASHINGTON D.C. – A warning from the Better Business Bureau: Scammers are up to new tricks, this time involving voicemails.
Scammers leave voicemails about some sort of emergency, in hopes you call back. The number looks like it comes from the United States with an area code like 809, 284, 649 and 876. In truth, they are international numbers.
According to the BBB, because it’s an international number, the scammer doesn’t have to tell you about additional fees. In fact, you could be calling a 1-900 number and not even know it. They may be looking for money through these charges, or they might be looking for your personal information.
In case you ever get a call like this, don’t return them. If you get a call like this, either don’t answer or hang up.
