KENNEWICK, Wash. (AP) — A church group distributing Bibles interrupted an apparent suicide attempt at an apartment in Kennewick.

Kennewick police Cpl. Matt Newton says the group knocked, and a man came to the door covered in blood. They ran down stairs and called police.

The Tri-City Herald reports that officers surrounded the apartment and yelled at the man to come out the front door. Instead, he came out on a balcony and said something police couldn't understand before going back inside.

A SWAT team was called out of fear that someone may be keeping the man inside, but the man eventually came out of the apartment and was taken to a hospital.

Police say the man had sent a text message to his girlfriend saying he was going to kill himself.
