'Citizen's arrest' backfires on gun-toting neighbor
SEATTLE -- A man reportedly trying to make a "citizen's arrest" was arrested Monday night for investigation of assault after brandishing a gun outside a neighbor's house, the Seattle Police Department said.
Police received a call of a 58-year-old man with a gun standing in front of a house in the 3900 block of South Warsaw Street and threatening the residents inside around 7:45 p.m. Monday. When police arrived at the home, they allegedly found the man waving the gun and shouting threatening remarks at the home's residents. Police quickly arrested him.
According to police, three victims at the home said the suspect drove up to the residence in his truck, got out, walked into the yard and shoved and punched one of the men. The suspect was allegedly upset that one of the victims stole another gun he owned, and he was there to retrieve it. When the victims said they didn't steal the suspect's gun, he allegedly pulled out another weapon and pointed it at the victims.
The victims rushed inside and called police.
Police spoke with the suspect who told them that he was making a "citizen's arrest" because of his alleged stolen gun. But police determined the man harassed the victims and didn't have the authority to make a "citizen's arrest." The suspect was booked into King County Jail on investigation of assault.
The man was legally allowed to carry a gun because of a valid Carrying Concealed Weapons permit. The man's gun and permit were placed into evidence.
