Don James public memorial to be held this afternoon

SEATTLE- The memorial for former University of Washington football coach Don James will be held at the Alaska Airlines Arena this afternoon.

The memorial is open to the public. Doors open at 2pm, with the memorial beginning at 3pm.

James was the UW Huskies head coach from 1975-1992. He finished his coaching career at UW with a record of 153-58 and two ties in 18 seasons.

During his career, he won six conference titles, a national championship title and led the Huskies to the Rose Bowl.

UW’s football program paid tribute to him on Saturday night during the game against California. Players and coaches wore decals with the initials “DJ” and members of his family served as honorary captains for the pre-game coin toss.

James passed away last Sunday from pancreatic cancer at the age of 80.
