Early morning fire damages Kent portable classroom
KENT, Wash. -- A fire that broke out early Tuesday morning heavily damaged a portable classroom at Scenic Hill Elementary School in Kent.
Police discovered the fire while responding to a different alarm at the school. Police called firefighters after finding smoke coming from the single-room portable, which sits about 50 feet from the schools main building.
Inside the building firefighters found a small fire that blackened the floor and ceiling and melted chairs and desks in the classroom. The fire did not spread.
Kent Regional Fire Authority believes an electrical failure in a carpet drier sparked the fire. The drier was running in that portable and another one nearby.
School is not currently in session.
