Man shot, killed by police in Centralia, WA
CENTRALIA, Wash. - A domestic dispute in Centralia turned deadly on Sunday when a police officer fatally shot a man during a physical altercation.
The incident happened around 10:56 a.m. in the 400 block of North Ash Street, according to the Centralia Police Department.
Upon arrival, police say the first responding officer engaged with a male subject, leading to a physical confrontation. During the struggle, the officer shot the man. Despite receiving emergency medical treatment at the scene, the man was pronounced dead.
The officer sustained injuries in the altercation, but no bystanders were harmed.
Following standard protocol for critical incidents, the department says the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave.
CPD reports they have initiated an independent investigation by notifying the Washington State Office of Independent Investigations (OII), in compliance with RCW 43.102.
OII investigators are currently on the scene to conducting an examination of the incident, according to CPD.
As part of the department's Body Worn Camera (BWC) Program, footage from the officer's body-worn camera will be reviewed and released at a later date. The Centralia Police Department has confirmed that its personnel will not participate in the independent investigation, adhering to statutory requirements.
The information released by the police department is preliminary, and the investigation remains ongoing. Further details will be provided as they become available.
