Father of missing baby shot, killed after carjacking; child still missing

REDDING, Calif. (AP) — The father of a missing baby in Northern California was shot and killed by deputies following a car chase Monday, authorities confirmed.

The Siskiyou County Sheriff Department says officers pursued 23-year-old Matthew Graham on Monday morning after spotting a car he had stolen. The pursuit ended with deputies opening fire.

Graham reported his 6-month-old daughter's disappearance from his Happy Valley home in Shasta County on July 2. He became a person of interest after giving inconsistent statements to investigators. The girl, Ember, remains missing.

Sheriff's officials say he stole the car from Shasta Lake and was pursued to Dunsmuir in neighboring Siskiyou County.

Deputies swarmed Shasta Lake over the weekend after people reported spotting Graham there.

Authorities say Graham stole a semiautomatic gun from his mother a day after hearing that the search for his daughter had turned up a possible lead.
