Killer of 19-year-old Jayme Thomas sentenced to 28 years
SEATTLE -- A Des Moines man was sentenced Friday to 28 years in prison for the shooting death of 19-year-old Jayme Thomas and the wounding of a 24-year-old friend of hers in the Redondo Beach area of the city two years ago.
Johnny Rourn pleaded guilty in August to second-degree murder and second-degree assault in the case. Both charges included firearm sentencing enhancements.
Police said that on Nov. 5, 2011, Rourn got into an argument with some of Thomas' friends after leaving a party in the Redondo Beach area of Des Moines, followed them across the street and opened fire on their car. He told detectives he was drunk and didn't know there was someone in the backseat of the car.
Thomas, who was sitting in the backseat of the car, was struck three times. Her friend, Scott Kennedy, was also hit, but he survived.
Thomas had been studying at Highline Community College to be a nurse.
