Lakewood police to release details into fatal police shooting

LAKEWOOD, Wash. (AP) — Police in Lakewood are planning Monday to release details into last month's police shooting of a 37-year-old man at a lumberyard in the Tacoma suburb.

Police have said they found Daniel Covarrubias atop a stack of lumber at Pinnacle Lumber and Plywood on April 21. They said two officers opened fire when the man reached into his pocket.

Officers were investigating reports of a suspicious person at the yard. Multiple 911 callers had reported seeing a man running before climbing a fence into the lumber yard.

A police spokesman said last month that police had not been chasing him prior to the 911 calls and that it wasn't clear why he entered the yard or why he was running.
