Living units at Walla Walla Penitentiary on lockdown after fight in yard

WALLA WALLA, Washington (AP) — Four living units in the west complex of the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla are on lockdown after a fight in the outdoor recreation yards.

State corrections officials say the lockdown was called after warning shots were fired during the prisoner fight Monday night that involved about 60 people.

Officials say one staff member suffered a minor injury. The cause of the fight is under investigation and the lockdown will continue until the investigation is complete. Visits to the west units have been cancelled until the lockdown is lifted.

The Washington State Penitentiary houses nearly 2,550 offenders in minimum, medium, close and maximum security units.
