Man accused of killing mom with screwdriver, seriously injuring friend

LACEY -- Police arrested a 30-year-old Lacey man for allegedly killing his mother with a screwdriver Monday and stabbing and critically injuring a 67-year-old friend in a home a few miles away.

Police spent Monday evening gathering evidence at the home of the suspect's mother. But they’re still no closer to figuring out why the man allegedly killed his mother and stabbed the other victim in the neck.

“We really have not been able to determine any type of motive,” Thurston County sheriff's acting Capt. Greg Elwin said. “We have conducted fairly extensive interviews with the suspect already.”

The suspect used to live in the same neighborhood as the second victim. Neighbors helped identify him, so police knew who they were looking for. But they didn’t expect him to show back up at his mother’s home Mondayafternoon.

“He seemed surprised to see law enforcement when he drove up,” Elwin said. “We snared him up and took him into custody.”

Police said it doesn’t appear the suspect has a criminal record, which makes it even harder to understand the violent natures of these crimes.

“He’s been very calm and deliberate, kind of chillingly so," Elwin said. "That makes us wonder what would cause this guy to go off and do these horrible things.”

Police say the second victim was stabbed multiple times with a screwdriver-like weapon. He was taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital. At last report, he was undergoing surgery.
