Man pleads not guilty in 83-year-old grandmother's stabbing death

EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — A 24-year-old man accused of stabbing his grandmother to death and attacking his grandfather pleaded not guilty Monday in Everett to charges of murder and attempted murder.

Shane Hathaway is held on $2 million bail with trial set for March 27.

Snohomish County prosecutors say he stabbed 83-year-old Betty Sorg more than 30 times in the Jan. 15 attack at their home in Mill Creek. Prosecutors say he also attacked his grandfather, 83-year-old James Sorg, but he was able to barricade himself in a room.

The Daily Herald reports court records show Hathaway had threatened his grandparents in the past and has a history of hearing voices and illegal drug use.
