Mariners name Trent Jewett as bench coach
SEATTLE -- Less than a week after the Seattle Mariners announced Lloyd McClendon as the organization's newest Manager, McClendon has begun building his coaching staff.
Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik and McClendon announced Monday the hiring of Trent Jewett as Bench Coach. Jewett has spent the last three seasons on the Washington Nationals coaching staff. The 49-year-old was the Nationals third base coach in 2013 and first base coach prior to that.
The Dallas, Texas native will enter his 27th season in professional baseball, and his seventh season as an MLB coach. Before his time in Washington, Jewett spent his entire career as a play, coach and minor league manager in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.
“I am looking forward to getting the chance to work with Trent again,” said McClendon. “We go back a ways as he was on my coaching staff in Pittsburgh, and we have a very trusting relationship.”
