Most Americans want Congress fired
WASHINGTON -- The toxic atmosphere in the nation's capitol is starting to take a toll.
According to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal Poll, 60 percent of Americans want every member of Congress, including their own representative, fired. Just 35 percent say they would not.
The 60 percent figure is the highest-ever in that question recorded in a poll.
The poll comes as lawmakers continue to battle over the government shutdown and the debt ceiling deadline. If the U.S. fails to raise the debt ceiling before October 17, the nation will default on its loans for the first time in history.
The poll also found that 47 percent want Congress controlled by Democrats in the next election, compared to 39 percent who want a Republican controlled Congress. 14 percent were not sure.
In another sign of dissatisfaction with the state of politics, 47 percent of Americans said they don't strongly identify with either party.
