M's struggling, but Seattle baseball fans have something to brag about
SEATTLE -- The Seattle Mariners may not always win (see: this season), but at least the team's fans can accurately express their despair in a grammatically correct way.
Grammarly, an automated-proofreading startup, and The Wall Street Journal recently published a study that identified the most-spelling challenged fans of Major League Baseball teams.
The study reviewed 150 reader comments from each of the 32 teams websites, and compiled a list of mistakes. Grammarly then averaged the number of mistakes made per fan post.
Mets lovers ranked as the most error-prone fans, averaging about 13.9 mistakes per 100 words. Philadelphia Phillies fans weren't far behind, averaging about 13.5 mistakes per 100 words.
The Mariners, however, ranked among the best spelling and punctuating fans in all of baseball, averaging only 5.2 mistakes per 100 words. Fans of the M's were tied for fourth-best spellers and grammar eyes in all of the MLB, bested by only the White Sox, Padres and Indians.
Of course, pessimists will point to the fact that M's fans still average more grammatical mistakes per 100 words (5.2) than the team averages runs per game in the 2015 season (3.4).
But that's neither here or there. Or is it here NOR there. Who knows? Better ask some M's fans.
The Mariners are fourth in the AL West division, with a record of 32-39.
