No more Tacoma Dome?
TACOMA -- Maybe the Starbucks muffin top?
City officials began soliciting corporate bids this week to explore selling the naming rights to the iconic Tacoma Dome to raise money to refurbish the 30-year-old convention center, the News Tribune reported Wednesday.
The city will accept sealed bids until July 16.
The News Tribune said city officials flirted with selling the Dome’s naming rights to Comcast in 2003 for up to $7 million in cash and advertising, but that the public outcry against it – especially after learning Comcast wanted to drop Tacoma from the name entirely -- led the City Council to oppose the deal and the cable company withdrew its offer.
Comcast put its name on the Everett arena instead.
