Official: 2 women shot at Virginia community college; suspect detained
(CNN) -- Two women were shot Friday at a New River Community College campus located inside a mall in Christiansburg, Virginia, a town spokeswoman said.
The suspected shooter has been taken into custody, spokeswoman Becky Wilburn said in a statement.
"The mall is presently being cleared of shoppers and to ensure there are no further victims," she said midafternoon. "At this time, we do not believe there is any continuing threat to the community at large."
One victim was flown by helicopter; the other took an ambulance to a hospital, according to Wilburn.
No details were offered on the women's identities or conditions, nor was any information released on the suspected shooter.
Around 1:55 p.m., someone called 911 to report a person with a gun and shots being fired within the southwest Virginia community college's satellite location. Officers were on site within five minutes.
A woman who works at a mall clothing store near the campus said the business locked down.
"We were a little in disbelief at first but we saw people running away from that area," Diana Greenman told CNN affiliate WDBJ.
The school announced on its Facebook page that its two campuses -- one in Dublin, Virginia, and the other at New River Valley Mall, where the incident occurred -- had been closed. Saturday's classes were canceled.
Montgomery County Schools were briefly locked down, but that order was later lifted.
